You're on a tight budget, we get that. You've saved hard for this trip and want to make every dollar work hard. Initially, the prospect of eating 2-minute noodles every night may seem ok. But when in a city with all the appealing food smells, you want to treat yourself and need to get a break from the campervan cooking. We understand you'd rather spend your hard earned dollars on experiences and adventures around New Zealand, so we've created a list of cheap must-eat places. All these places are small in price but big in taste and filling - with some from only $5 for a meal!

So get inspired and bon appétit with our 15 cheap-eats you definitely need to try out when exploring both the North and South Island.

When picking up your vehicle in Auckland, Christchurch or Queenstown don't miss out on...

Big J's Takeaways, Auckland

Big J's offer big, juicy gourmet burgers for $10 or less. And in addition to this incredibly cheap price, the burgers get served with great kiwi hospitality and sense of humour.

Freeman & Grey, Auckland

Against all claims that you can't find a cheap meal in Ponsonby, Freeman & Grey serves delicious $5 quality Pizza every day from 12-2pm & 5-7.30pm.

No.1 Pancake, Auckland

No. 1 Pancake is quite famous in Auckland so you might have to queue up. But the sweet & savoury Korean-style treats are definitely worth it - especially when you get 3 pancakes for only $10.

Ollie's Ice Cream Parlour, Auckland

Ollie's ice cream parlour in Royal Oak is a lot like a time capsule and the old favourites have remained popular. You can get sundaes and banana splits for around $5.

Sushi Deals, Nationwide

Mostly found in shopping malls, check out the late afternoon sushi deals for $5 from around 3pm-5pm.

Night Market, Wellington

Wellington's night market on Cuba Street takes place every Friday and Saturday evening. It caters for all tastes and budgets and we think it's the best way to soak up Wellington's food scene. But make sure to bring a lot of appetite as it will be hard to choose from the vast amount of food stalls!

Rogue and Vagabond, Wellington

Who can resist a $2 Taco Tuesday Special?? No one right, it's such a bargain! So from 5pm onwards, you can tuck into those tasty tacos.

Renall Street Store & Lotto, Masterton

The Renall Street Store & Lotto shop is famous for their gigantic ice cream scoops and the ridiculously cheap prices. They offer colourful scoops of 22 flavours of Tip-Top or 10 of Kapiti ice cream for $2 a scoop.

Erik's Fish & Chips, Queenstown

At famous Erik's for only $10 you get one piece of hoki/hot dog with a scoop of chips, a soft drink and sauce. That's an unbeatable deal we think!

Fergburger, Queenstown

Lots of people describe these as the best burgers in the world and any backpacker who has been to Queenstown probably would agree. Not super cheap, ranging from $10-20 but these inventive burgers should definitely be high on your New Zealand must-eat list.
