8 Free Experiences That Will Be The Highlight Of Your Trip

A fun fact about New Zealand and Australia is the Milky Way isn’t as bright in the southern hemisphere during the warmer months. So bundle up, grab somebody to keep you warm, and lay back to enjoy some of the clearest skies in the world.

You've worked hard and saved up a whole load of cash for your dream trip. Lucky, as travelling ain't cheap! There is a whole list of amazing experiences you can pay to enjoy whilst in New Zealand, so to help you balance the books we've put together a list of activities and experiences that will cost you nothing. Chances are that these will end up being the real highlights of your trip.

Sunset at 90 Mile Beach - North Island

This has to be one of New Zealand's most epic places to catch a sunset. A quiet, serene, and endless beach that typifies the New Zealand coastline. Grab a drink and some snacks and enjoy a sunset experience that's hard to forget.

Relax at the Thermal Hotpools, Rotorua - North Island

Tucked away at the base of a volcano, this is a must-visit location on the drive south. A thermally heated river with a waterfall and plunge pool provides a great place to relax and rest after the must-do hike up Rainbow Mountain.

Walk the Tongariro Alpine Crossing - North Island

Walk among volcanoes, while geothermal steam rises up all around you. Mount Ngarahoe (aka Mount Doom from The Lord Of The Rings) is well worth the side trip if you have time. Firstly to say you've climbed a volcano. Secondly, just look at the views!

Slide down Rere Rockslide - North Island

This place has become a mega hangout for locals and thrill-seeking travellers. If sliding down a natural rockslide at speed isn't your thing, then the nearby Rere Falls, where you can walk through the waterfall itself to a secret cave behind will be.

Swim at the Blue Pools, Makarora - South Island

Blue Pools is the place to take a refreshing dip. Swim, lunch, sunbathe, and then do it all again. You couldn't pick a better place to spend an afternoon exploring and relax.

Star Gazing in McKenzie Region - South Island

Regular cloudless night skies and the lack of light pollution make this area well renowned for stargazing. Find your camp spot, and just before bed, pull out the yoga mat/picnic blanket and lie staring up at the galaxy for a while. If you're lucky you may even see the Milky Way.

Hike up Roys Peak - South Island

A 5-6 hour walk may sound off-putting, but the views at the top are well worth it. We promise you.

Marvel at Punakaiki Rocks - South Island

A natural phenomenon, these pancake-layered rocks are a unique attraction. If you're lucky (and plan it well with the tide), you'll see the blow holes in full action sending spouts of water high above the rocks. Do not miss it!
