Five epic north island adventures this winter

Posted by:
The Mighty Fellas

With quieter roads and less people about, winter is one of the best times of the year to go on an epic North Island adventure.  Better yet, call in and try out one (or some) of these top five things to do on your way to Ohakune. They are bound to get your blood pumping and ready for an epic adventure.

All of these activities are only a few hours out of Auckland so why not enjoy a winter getaway this year? Grab a friend (or two), book a camper and get exploring!

Want to get your heart pumping before the big nights in Ohakune? The Black Labyrinth, the Black Abyss and the Odyssey will certainly deliver on this. Deep in the heart of the Ruakuri Cave, legend and adventure will captivate and enhance your imagination as you navigate the never ending limestone passageways. Grab a tube or endure the high ropes, the opportunities are endless.

Give sky diving a go while you're exploring the world's most adventurous country. With a choice between 15,000ft or 12,000ft why not give this a good crack. The Central North Island is by far one of the most beautiful places in New Zealand to visit and you'll get to see this while falling from the sky. The ultimate adrenalin pumping adventure.

Gravity Canyon is New Zealand's biggest Adventure playground, located alongside the Rangitikei River deep within the Mokai Canyon.  You can choose to face your fears by Bungy jumping 80 metres off New Zealand's Highest Bridge Bungy, Freefalling 50 metres into the Mokai Canyon on the Giant Swing above the mighty Rangitikei River or Ride the World's most Amazing Flying Fox at 1.1km long, reaching speeds of up to 160kph.

Attention Powder Hounds, the time has come to do what you do best. If you haven't been here before 'Welcome' and if you are returning 'Welcome Home'. Whakapapa and Turoa are Ruapehu's finest ski fields and they definitely deliver the Promised Land. Carve it up on the ski fields by day and party by night.  Take old friends or make new ones. Make this winter count. Go hard or go home.

Glide to the top of Mount Ngongotaha in a peaceful gondola ride before embarking on the epic luge. Race your friends around one of three tracks winding through some of Rotorua's most beautiful forest. Unwind afterwards with a drink in the bar before heading back to Rotovegas and letting the party continue...
