What a week, and what a climax to the tournament! The action on the
pitch has been set against an incredible party atmosphere off it.
After dusting off the cobwebs from the previous weekend, we drove north to
the Bay of Islands. Swapping the comfort of our campervan for a yacht for a few
days' sailing, we explored the wonderful islands from another mobile home.
We were treated to decent weather and two separate sightings of Killer
Whales, majestic creatures who are apparently rare to see, especially so close
up.
After a relaxing week we returned to Auckland, staying in the familiar and
friendly Westhaven Marina campervan park. Auckland was teeming with travelling
fans, and the party atmosphere was in full swing. Our favourite destination was
the Viaduct area around the marina, with every bar packed to the rafters with
vociferous rugby supporters.
The end of the tournament sadly marks the end of our own trip here in New
Zealand. We have had a simply incredible time. Being able to set our own
itinerary with the campervan has given us the freedom to roam wherever we
wanted, and with so much to see and do the only challenge has been to fit
everything in. We have given it our best attempt, and driven over 5,000 of
kilometres, from the southern tip of the South Island, right up to the northern
corner of the North Island.
Waiting to board a long flight back to the other side of the world gives us
time to reflect on a simply wonderful adventure. Thanks to our cosy home for the
past 6 weeks, and thanks to New Zealand for providing an incredible host
country.
