Liability Options

It might sound like a drag but when you rent a campervan, it's important to know you're protected should the unthinkable happen. All Mighty campervans are insured for damage to the vehicle or to the property of a Third Party.

Although all Mighty Campervan rentals have insurance cover, there are different levels of Accident Liability and Liability Deposit that can be selected to reduce the stress when on the road.

These sometimes vary depending on the dates you travel so check your travel period to see how you can reduce your Liability Deposit and Accident Liability.

The following information relates to rentals collecting by 31 March 2024. If you're travelling between April 2024 and March 2025 click here for details.

Terms Explained

What is Liability?

Accident liability is the maximum dollar amount (cost) which the hirer is responsible to pay per accident. This includes damage to the rental vehicle and any third party property. The accident liability which applies depends upon the option selected by the hirer. Standard accident liability is included in the daily vehicle hire rate. For a reduced accident liability, the hirer may choose to purchase the Liability Reduction Option or the Inclusive Pack. It is important to note that irrespective of the option selected, that liability is not limited in some cases which are excluded or if the terms of the Rental Agreement are breached by the hirer and this causes or contributes to any damage.

Important: Be aware that with Standard Accident Liability, you will be responsible for costs relating to damage of your motorhome or any third party property if you are responsible for an accident which occurs on your hire. Any costs incurred will be calculated and recovered at end of the hire, regardless of any independent cover you may have.

Exclusions from Liability Cover

It’s important to be aware that there are some situations where the hirer is responsible for the total cost of any damage in the case of an accident, even if the Liability Reduction Option or the Inclusive Pack have been purchased. Hirers are responsible for all costs related to:

  • Damage caused willfully or by negligence

  • The vehicle being driven under the influence of drugs or alcohol

  • Damage associated with an event where the hirer has been charged by local authorities for not abiding by local road rules

  • Recovering a vehicle from a situation which the hirer could have prevented. Eg. If the hirer abandons the vehicle or if the vehicle is bogged or submerged.

  • Damage to the top or underbody of the vehicle, unless the Liability Reduction Option or Inclusive Pack have been purchased

  • Single vehicle rollover damage, unless the the Inclusive Pack has been purchased

  • Damage caused by the vehicle being loaded in excess of permissible limits

  • Damage caused by drivers not identified on the rental agreement, who have an invalid driver’s license or who have a learners or probationary license

  • Damage caused by the incorrect use of snow chains

  • Damage associated with the incorrect use of fuel, including the use of biofuel

  • Damage caused by hirers pets

  • Damage which is caused or contributed to by a breach of the Rental Agreement by the hirer

Road user charge recovery fee - what is it?

The Road User Charge Recovery Fee is payable on diesel vehicles upon vehicle return. The Road User Charge Recovery Fee is included in the Express Return Pack.

If the Express Return Pack is not selected, the Road User Charge Recovery Fee will be calculated and collated on return of the campervan based on the kilometres travelled during the hire.

The charges per 100km are listed below:

  • Highball, Double Down, Deuce, Deuce Plus - NZ$7.64
  • Double Up and Big Six: NZ$8.04

Mighty reserves the right to amend the Road User Charge Recovery Fee in response to changes in Government Road User Charges.

Credit cards

A non-refundable 2.7% administration fee applies to all Visa and MasterCard transactions or 5.2% for American Express. A customer’s credit or debit will be required for the purposes of the Credit Card Authority. The credit or debit card holder is jointly and severally liable for any damage to the rental vehicle.

Don’t forget to check that your credit card has the funds available and that the amount does not exceed your daily withdrawal allowance.

Credit card authority

On pick of your motorhome, a credit card authority will be taken. See rental agreement for more details.

*If the agreement is breached and this causes or contributes to damage or exclusions apply, the customer is responsible for all damage. Please refer to the Rental Agreement.

Helpful Tips

We recommend you plug into 240 volt power on your first night and then every two or so days for the house battery to fully charge. The speed of the 12 volt battery drainage will depend on the climate and how often it is used. A full charge takes between 14 to 16 hours and needs to be done at a campground every two or so days.

Top-up the fresh water and empty the waste water every one to two days.

Empty the toilet cassette every one to two days, or as needed. The waste water tank and toilet cassette must be emptied at an authorised dump station. If you are staying in a Holiday Park, you will have access to one there. Otherwise, use the thl Roadtrip App to search for the closest one. Top-up and empty at every opportunity and you won’t have to worry about a thing!

Lastly, always remember, have your keys with you when you are outside the camper.
